Combined chapter end-of-semester party @ Pier 26, Darling Harbour

As the sun set over Sydney on the evening of November 30, over 100 Golden Key members, alumni and friends mingled over drinks and canapes at Pier 26 (on Sydney Harbour) to celebrate the end of the university year, and also to welcome the onset of summer. In addition to attendees from the host chapters of the University of Sydney, the University of Western Sydney and Macquarie University, it was fantastic to see attendees from other chapters, including the ANU, the University of New England, and even a Golden Key member from Canada.

The organisers hope that the positive feedback from this very successful social event will result in this end-of-semester event becoming an annual highlight of the Golden Key calendar. Social functions such as the Pier 26 party, provide excellent opportunities for Golden Key members to tap into the network of gregarious people who make up the society.

We look forward to enjoying more fun social events in the new year!

General meeting - September 16, 2004

In keeping with this year's aim of increasing the profile of Golden Key on campus, we recently held a General Meeting at the meeting rooms on Level 5 of the Wentworth Building. The purpose of this meeting was to provide a forum where general members could meet with the Executive, and offer their suggestions for future events.

Being the first such General Meeting of the 2004-2005 term, General Member attendance was a little less than anticipated - however, it was great to see the enthusiasm of those who turned up.

We will be holding another General Meeting in Week 13 (the last week of the academic year) to discuss the very important issue of Golden Key's status within the Sydney University Union. This issue is discussed on Page 2 of our latest newsletter - it is in your interests to read this article.

As we realise that many of our members are away from Main Campus, and so are unable to make our meetings, we have established online forums through which you can participate in discussions. Please also feel free to email us at usyd@golden-key.org with ideas that you might have.

We look forward to seeing you in Week 13, at our Second General Meeting.

Picnic in the Park - Royal Botanic Gardens

Our second Golden Key social, a picnic held during the midsemester break in the Royal Botanic Gardens on Tuesday September 28, turned out to be an enjoyable and unforgettable gathering filled with laughter. Despite the unfriendly damp weather, it was good to see that both executive members and general members turned up without any loss of enthusiasm. We met some new faces who hadn't been able to get involved in previous GK events.

Of course a picnic isn't a picnic without lots of snacks. Chips, lollies, cakes, bread rolls, hams and drinks were handed around. Special thanks to Liliana for baking us those delectable cookies! It was a fantastic opportunity to relax and chitchat against the backdrop of the beautiful harbour view.

Thanks for all your support by coming along to the picnic. Did you miss out this wonderful social? No worries! There are still plenty of opportunities to have fun and get to know other Golden Key members. Many more exciting social events are planned - just keep an eye out for them! We look forward to seeing you next time.

Cocktail Soiree @ Industrie

Golden Key's inaugural Cocktail Soiree, held on the evening of Thursday 26th August, was a great success. The elegant, sophisticated environs of the Mezzanine level @ Industrie (107 Pitt St, Sydney) hosted an evening during which glamourously-dressed Golden Key members and other Sydney University students mingled and networked with one another while being entertained by a live jazz band. Drinks were accompanied by cheese platters, fresh fruit platters, and an antipasto selection. From 8pm onwards, Golden Key members were able to enjoy beverages from the bar - the 'cocktail party' element of the evening truly kicked off at 11pm, when the bar was opened to the extraordinary range of cocktails on offer.

Thanks must go to Michael and his staff at Industrie for facilitating a fabulous evening, and also the entire Executive for their tireless efforts in blanketing the campus with posters for the social, for diligently selling tickets, and for spreading the *buzz* about the event.

We look forward to another exciting Golden Key social function. If you missed out this time round, make sure you keep an eye out for our next social gathering - you wouldn't want to miss out twice!

Social Annual General Meeting

Members mingle with outgoing executive before the AGM officially begins.

On June 3rd 2004, the University of Sydney Chapter of Golden Key held its 11th Annual General Meeting at the Common Room (Holme Building). Owing perhaps to its promotion as a 'social' event, attendance was well above expectations - the event was attended by around 50 members, both old and new. In addition to all executive positions being filled, sub-committees for the areas of Community Service, Campus Awareness, Careers, Sponsorship and the Newsletter were created.

The new Executive Committee for 2004-2005 would like to thank the out-going Executive, and wish them the best for all their future endeavours. Golden Key also welcomes our new Executive members; we hope they find their involvement in Golden Key to be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. We would also encourage newly inducted members to become involved in one of our newly created sub-committees, and assist in our upcoming events - it's a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, as well as to develop professional and personal skills!

New Members Reception Ceremony

Jeff McMullen presenting awards to new members.

At the 2004 New Members Reception Ceremony, new Golden Key members were not only given the opportunity to have their achievements recognised, but were also able to learn more about the values and goals of the Society. These aspirations were perfectly encapsulated through speeches delivered by Jeff McMullen (in his capacity as a director of the Ian Thorpe Fountain for Youth Trust), Doctor Karl Kruszelnicki (in his capacity as a new Honorary Member of Golden Key) and Peter Dodd (in his capacity as the Chapter's Academic Adviser). Through encouraging members to make a meaningful difference in the wider community, the speakers showcased the fundamental 'participatory' element of Golden Key. No doubt the message that new members took home with them at the conclusion of the ceremony was that, through actively participating in the opportunities and activities provided by the Society, they could make a meaningful difference in their community, and, in the process, achieve significant personal growth.

Information Evening

President James Donald speaking to prospective members.

On Monday May 3rd, we hosted our 2004 Info Evening. The aim of this event was to provide a forum for prospective member to hear more about what GK has to offer and the benefits of joining. The guest speaker was Mr Dean Butters, the Regional Director, Golden Key, Asia-Pacific. Also, James Donald, the curent President at Sydney University spoke about what the Chapter has been involved in on-campus, highlighting the Chapter's community service activities involving Ian Thorpe's Fountain For Youth, The Exodus Foundation, and the NSW Cancer Council.

Careers Night 2004

  • Date / Time: Wednesday, April 28th, 2004, 5:30-8pm
  • Venue: Wenthworth Level 5

John Omahony, former Golden Key President, sharing 'How Golden Key has helped me'

Golden Key's annual Careers Night, held on Level 5 of the Wentworth Building, was a unique opportunity for all Union members (Golden Key, and non-Golden Key alike) to hear speakers from a range of organisations speak on career-related topics, and also to gain personalized feedback on their resumes during the 'CV workshopping panel', which was staffed by representatives from ANZ, CSIRO and Macquarie Bank.

Attendees of the Careers Night heard from such dynamic speakers as John O'Mahony, a former Golden Key President (now working at Leading Edge Economics), who spoke about how becoming involved in Golden Key and other university organisations could significantly benefit students' career options. Gary Vassallo from Macquarie Bank delivered an insightful speech discussing the 'Dos and Donts' of the interview process, enabling students from all faculties (rather than just Economics and Business) to gain significantly from this presentation. Following these speeches, students were invited to split into smaller groups to hear from the ANZ representatives, who spoke about careers in the commercial field, or from the CSIRO representatives, who focused on careers in the science and engineering arena.

The provision of this free information evening to all Union members is but an example of Golden Key's desire to host functions from which the entire student body (and not exclusively Golden Key members) can benefit. The positive feedback from attendees that the Golden Key Committee received from the function will encourage Golden Key to organise more events of this ilk.
